How long does a US visa take from India? A stage-by-stage guide

Quick Answer

No single number applies. A US visa from India moves through stages, and each stage has its own source of timing: a published estimate for the interview wait, a date you may already hold, and assumptions you set for preparation and passport return. Administrative processing can add case-specific time that no fixed buffer covers.

How long does a US visa take from India?

There is no single duration. A US nonimmigrant visa from India moves through up to seven stages, each with its own source of timing. WaitDelta labels every timing as a sourced estimate, a date you already know or an assumption you set, because the three are not interchangeable and none covers administrative processing.

To build a scenario for your own dates, use the visa timeline calculator. It follows the stages below.

This guide covers nonimmigrant visas from India: visitor, student and petition-based work visas. It does not combine an employment-based green card queue with a visa timeline.

Which branch matches your visa?

Pick the branch that matches your visa: visitor (B-1/B-2), student (F-1) or petition-based work (H-1B, L-1 and similar). The stages are the same in outline, but what must exist before you apply differs: a visitor needs nothing from USCIS, a student needs a school-issued Form I-20, and a work applicant needs an approved USCIS petition.

What are the stages, and what sets the timing of each?

A US visa from India has seven stages: documents and approvals, application and fee, booking, interview wait, the interview, post-interview handling and passport return. Each has a different source of timing, and post-interview handling has no standard length.

The seven stages of a US visa from India
StageWhat happensWhere the timing comes fromKind of timing

2. Application and feeThe DS-160 and the visa application fee. Students also pay the SEVIS fee.YouYour assumption
3. BookingChoosing a post and a date in the official appointment system. The dates your booking account offersA date you hold, once offered
4. Interview waitThe time between booking and the interview.A published State Department estimate, or the date your account showsA sourced estimate, or a date you hold

6. Post-interview handlingApproval, refusal or administrative processing under INA section 221(g).No standard length; it varies by caseUnknown
7. Passport returnThe passport is returned after the visa is placed.Your own assumption about deliveryYour assumption

Keep the three kinds of timing apart. A sourced estimate is a published figure with a date. A date you hold comes from your booking account or an approval. An assumption is a number you set yourself, such as preparation days. Mixing them makes a plan look more certain than it is.

How long does the USCIS petition take before a work visa can be stamped?

A work visa cannot be stamped until USCIS approves the petition. With premium processing, USCIS commits to take action on H-1B, L-1A and L-1B petitions within 15 business days, where action includes a request for evidence, which resets the clock. Standard processing times are posted in USCIS's case processing tool.

  • Petition not yet approved. The timeline depends on USCIS and on any request for evidence, and WaitDelta cannot estimate it. See USCIS premium processing and USCIS case processing times.
  • Petition approved and awaiting stamping. Start at booking. Stages 3 to 7 apply.

For H-1B petitions covered by Proclamation 11069, the filing includes proof of the $100,000 payment or an exception. The booking guide explains what the proclamation does and does not address.

How long is the wait for a US visa interview in India?

The State Department publishes interview wait estimates by post and visa group, and WaitDelta shows them with the date it read them. An estimate is not an appointment date, WaitDelta withholds petition-based figures while it verifies them, and only your booking account shows the dates open to you.

Visa classes share estimates: H-1B and L-1, for example, share one petition-based estimate, so a figure for one is not a separate measurement of the other. US visa wait times in India lists the estimates WaitDelta publishes, and How WaitDelta measures visa interview wait estimates explains what each figure is and is not.

What happens after the interview, and how long does it take?

After the interview the officer approves the visa, refuses it or places the case in administrative processing under INA section 221(g). An approved visa is placed in the passport, which is then returned. Administrative processing has no standard length, and a published wait estimate describes the wait for an interview, not the time after it.

  • Approved: the consulate keeps the passport to place the visa, then returns it.
  • Refused under INA section 221(g): the officer may ask for more documents or place the case in administrative processing. No calendar buffer can promise a date.
  • Refused on another ground: the refusal letter states the ground and the next steps.

How can you build a planning scenario?

Use the visa timeline calculator: choose your stage, supply either a published estimate or your own interview date, edit the preparation and passport-return assumptions, and read the result as a scenario, not a deadline. The calculator labels every date as a sourced estimate, a date you supplied or an assumption.

Open the visa timeline calculator. H-1B and other petition-based estimates are withheld while WaitDelta verifies them; the interview-date stage works for any visa class.

What stays unknown?

Five things stay unknown: whether a given appointment date will open, how long administrative processing lasts if it applies, whether USCIS will ask for more evidence, whether your documents will need follow-up, and how long passport return takes in your case.

Plan around these as risks, not as a fixed number of spare days. A scenario that fits your target date with room to spare is better than one that fits exactly, and neither is a promise.

Does this guide cover green cards?

No. This guide covers nonimmigrant visa planning from India. Employment-based green card timing depends on labor certification, USCIS petitions and annual queues, and it is not combined with a visa timeline here.
