What is the H-1B stamping wait time in India right now?

Can H-1B holders skip the interview in India (Dropbox)?

Ordinary H-1B renewals are not among the interview-waiver categories listed in the State Department's September 18, 2025 update. Check the latest official policy and India application instructions before relying on a waiver.

The update took effect on October 1, 2025. It keeps waivers for specific categories, including diplomatic and official visas and certain B-1/B-2 and H-2A renewals that meet stated conditions. The general requirements include applying in the country of nationality or usual residence (diplomatic and certain official visas are exempt from that), no unresolved earlier refusal and no apparent ineligibility. A consular officer can still require an interview from any applicant.

"Dropbox" is the common name in India for the interview-waiver route, where the passport and documents are submitted without an interview. Guides that describe a 12-month or 48-month Dropbox window for H-1B renewals reflect earlier guidance. Applicants should expect an in-person interview unless the official instructions for their case say otherwise.

When should you book an H-1B stamping appointment?

Book as soon as your petition approval, passport and DS-160 are ready and your booking account shows a date that fits your plans. A published wait estimate cannot show whether a date is open for your account today, so do not wait for one.

1. Confirm the petition. Keep the original approval notice (Form I-797) and check that your name, classification and validity dates match your records.
2. Complete the DS-160. File the online nonimmigrant visa application and save the confirmation page.
3. Open the official appointment account. Pay the visa application fee as the system instructs (the State Department's fee schedule lists the amount by visa class), then choose an interview post and date from those it offers.
4. Save the confirmation. It lists the documents to bring and the instructions for your post.
5. Reschedule only if you must. Law-firm alerts report that U.S. Mission India allows one reschedule, and that missing the new date can mean paying the fee again. Confirm the current rule in your account.

What can a published wait estimate show, and what can only your booking account show?

A published estimate describes a group of visa classes at one post as of a publication date. Only your booking account shows the dates open to you, your fee status and your reschedule options. A petition record and an employer notice answer different questions again.

Petition-based classes (H, L, O, P and Q) share one State Department estimate, so an H-1B figure is not a measurement of the H-1B queue alone. WaitDelta checks that mapping before it publishes a petition-based figure.

Which consulate should you choose for H-1B stamping in India?

Choose among the posts your booking account offers for your visa class, because open dates differ by post and change over time. WaitDelta has no verified data on how many H-1B slots each post allocates, so it does not rank the posts.

Since September 6, 2025, nonimmigrant visa applicants are expected to schedule interviews in their country of nationality or residence, which ended third-country stamping for most applicants. An applicant who lives in India chooses among the U.S. posts in India, and the booking account lists which of them offer the visa class.

Do passport return and administrative processing delay the visa after the interview?

Yes, they can. Passport return and administrative processing sit outside the interview queue and have no fixed duration. The State Department says processing times vary by case, so a travel plan should not assume a set number of days after the interview.

• Approved: the consulate keeps the passport to place the visa, then returns it to you.
• Refused under INA section 221(g): the officer may ask for more documents or place the case in administrative processing, which has no standard length.
• Refused on another ground: the refusal letter states the ground and the next steps.

Can you ask for an earlier H-1B stamping appointment?

Some applicants can request an expedited appointment for urgent circumstances, but the consulate decides, approval is discretionary and a regular booking usually comes first. Read the current conditions in your booking account before requesting, and do not assume the request will succeed.

Law-firm and news reporting describes the request as made inside the appointment system after a regular booking. The post sets the conditions and they change, so read them on the U.S. Mission India website; this guide does not restate them. Do not pay anyone for a guaranteed expedited date.

Does the online presence review change the H-1B interview process?

Yes. Since December 15, 2025, H-1B and H-4 visa applicants go through an online presence review, which asks them to set social media profiles to public. Law-firm alerts report that the review led posts in India to reschedule many interviews into 2026.

Reviewers are reported to compare professional profiles, such as LinkedIn, with the petition's employer, job title and dates. Keep those details consistent with the petition, and answer the DS-160 social media questions as the form asks.

If a post moved your interview, a December 11, 2025 Morgan Lewis alert advises against attending the original date and says only the newly issued appointment is honored.

Does the $100,000 H-1B payment affect stamping in India?

It can, for some petitions. Proclamation 11069 extends until September 21, 2027 the restriction on entry of H-1B workers whose petitions are not accompanied by a $100,000 payment, subject to limited exceptions. The employer makes the payment, and the State Department verifies it during the visa process.

Section 1(b) directs the Department of Homeland Security to restrict decisions on petitions without the payment for H-1B workers who are outside the United States. Section 2(b) tells the Secretary of State to approve only the visa applications for which the filing employer has made the payment. Section 1(c) lets the Department of Homeland Security grant exceptions in the national interest. USCIS says that, for petitions subject to the proclamation, Form I-129 must include pay.gov proof of the payment or an exception from the Secretary of Homeland Security.

Whether the payment applies to a given petition depends on the petition and on where the beneficiary was when it was filed, so ask your employer's immigration counsel. The proclamation text does not address the booking process, the interview-waiver list or published wait estimates.

Does the October 8, 2026 PERM action change H-1B stamping appointments?

No announcement says so. The October 8, 2026 action concerned employer-specific PERM (green card labor certification) restrictions. It did not announce a blanket H-1B visa suspension or cancel a consular appointment, so check your booking account and any notice from your employer for your own case.

Do you need a new visa stamp to return to the U.S. after travelling to India?

Yes, if your H-1B visa stamp has expired. The stamp is the document that lets you enter the United States, and it is issued only after a consular interview. A booked appointment does not guarantee issuance or a return date.

The stamp and your status are separate. Your H-1B status and work authorization inside the United States come from the USCIS approval, not from the visa stamp. Ask your employer's immigration counsel before booking travel that depends on a stamping date.

Which documents should you carry to the H-1B interview?

Carry the documents your appointment confirmation names. They typically include the passport, the DS-160 confirmation page, the appointment confirmation and the petition approval notice (Form I-797). The confirmation and the U.S. Mission India website are the authority on the full list.
